The FlyerBrian Milton - the First Microlight Circumnavigator

Just a few comments..

21st July 1998
On this day we have witnessed the triumphant and safe return of a Great Man. He has achieved something that most of us believed was impossible. Superlatives abound on the ATWIED chat page and in the many messages I have received here - I will not even try to better them!

A few years ago I was very privileged to fly with the "Flying North" team on the first trike flight to the Shetlands. For just a few hours, knees shaking, I rode in the back seat watching the icy North Sea slip by. Every creak, every change in engine noise set my heart racing!

That Brian spent all those long cold hours over Arctic waters is an incredible feat in itself. But he had much more than physical barriers to battle against:

The pen-pushers who tried their level best to block his route.

The sad people who decided that sponsorship was no longer a viable option - wouldn't you just love to be a fly-on-the-wall at the next board meeting?

But he pulled it off!

The Right Stuff INDEED!

Finally.....
In the midst of the all the celebrations, I feel it would be appropriate to mention a couple of people who deserve our best wishes and kind thoughts tonight:

Keith Reynolds
Keith's involvement no doubt contributed enormously to the success of the flight. When he left our hearts went out to him. Lets all hope he gets another chance - there is always another great adventure around the corner!

Phil Good
Phil was seriously injured in France having flown the Channel as part of the escort at the start of the flight. The latest reports are that he is making good progress, but it will be some time before he is fully recovered. The British Microlight Aircraft Association is running an appeal fund. Contributions are very welcome - please send to the BMAA office:
