at midnight on 21st July 1998, the day that Brian made his triumphant return to London. See who joined Brian for the final push! I hope
to update this page with details of more flyers soon. If you have met Brian or Keith anywhere
on this incredible flight Thanks for all the hard work - the flight could
not exist without you... I am now compiling a list of related sites -
microlights, ultralights, expeditions etc |
This site was thrown together at very short notice to try to give Brian Milton the welcome back he deserved following his incredible FIRST Round the World Flight by microlight. Our aim was to give as much information as possible so that fellow UK flyers and any other well-wishers had the opportunity to meet up with Brian as he makes his way home to London on the final leg of this Epic Flight. So did it work? As in any adventure, it wouldn't have been as fun if everything had worked out as planned! From the moment Brian arrived in Orkney, John Hunt's carefully worked out schedule went right out of the window! All due to the horrendous British summer weather. High winds and low clouds turned the "gentle jaunt" to London into a major expedition on its own! The route seemed to change almost as fast as I could type the words in! In the end Brian was forced to fly down the East side of the UK missing out Carlisle, Liverpool and Shobdon, leaving many flyers no doubt very disappointed at being unable to join in the final push - people like Phil Morton, who sat in a caravan for four days at Graham Hobson's field in Lancashire, hoping to meet our hero. But flyers understand these things only too well and we didn't get a single complaint (as yet)! Amidst the disappointments, the new route provided an unexpected bonus for some - Kevin Armstrong of Yorkshire, for instance, who called me for information. He just could not conceal his excitement when I told him the new route. I called him back a few minutes later with the latest ETA and his wife told me he was already airborne and heading for Bagby! My second highlight of the day occurred when Hang Gliding Champion Judy Leden (The first highlight was Judy ) called me from Bagby and handed the phone to the Great Man himself. As I have never spoken to Brian before, this was a total shock and I blurted out something totally useless, like "how are you....". After an overnight stop at Netherthorpe, the flight moved south to White Waltham to prepare for the final hop to Brooklands. Work commitments had kept me away from the keyboard for most of the day, but I managed get on-line about thirty minutes before ETA. I had asked the team to ring me when Brian was on approach, knowing that they would be much too busy! Then without warning Sky News switched to live TV coverage from Brooklands! I managed to get one message on the Flying Talk page as Brian made his flypast and then a second at the actual time of touchdown. So what about that touch down! For those of you that haven't seen the TV footage, Brian has described it as "one of his top five hairy landings". Blustery crosswinds had him fighting all the way down. In fact one of the eight escorting microlight was blown over. With willing helpers clinging to the wires, Brian and the Flyer were coaxed gently to the waiting mass media reception and hugs from his daughter Jade! TV News reports covered the story throughout the evening, including his arrival at London's Reform Club. The next morning Brian gave a long interview on Sky News Sunrise program. |
