MICROLIGHT CLUBS AND SCHOOLS IN THE UK
A club is a non-profit organisation set up for the mutual benefit of its members. A microlight training school is set up to provide a living for its owners, and is a commercial organisation. Often the two are the right and left hand of the same organisation, but there are many clubs that do not have an 'in house' training facility. Their members may have trained at many different establishments, and will be able to offer you a range of choices and opinions.
Before choosing a school you should consider the following:
TYPE OF AIRCRAFT
Do you want to fly weightshift or 3-axis? (See aircraft if you don't yet know the difference). Not all schools offer training on both types of aircraft, and those that do may not be able to provide a school aircraft for both types.
LOCATION
Try to choose somewhere within an hour's drive if possible. The British weather being what it is, the ability to take advantage of short-lived or unexpected breaks in the weather can be important. If you want to get your license quickly it may be worth considering one of the growing number of schools who offer training to PPL(A) or NPPL abroad.
SCHOOL AIRCRAFT AVAILABILITY
Will the school let you use their aircraft all the way to your license? Many schools only allow you to use their aircraft for dual lessons, and once you go solo you will have to buy your own aircraft to continue your training.
ABOUT THIS DIRECTORY
Micropages' directory lists all the UK clubs and schools that have a website. There are other directories on the web that claim to list all schools and clubs; the only one we would recommend as probably reasonably up to date is the one kept by the BMAA. We prefer to only link to information (ie current websites) that the clubs and schools themselves are directly responsible for. All entries in the directory are free, and clubs without a website can take advantage of our offer of a free editable website with no strings attached. (Offer also open to schools without a website, but they will be asked to contribute a nominal £50 per annum towards the upkeep of MicroPages).
